What's That Name by Carol Pace June 6-7 1987
Terrell Family Name can be Traced to Norman Warrior

The family of Terrell in America is of Anglo-Norman origin. It is said by some authorities to be from the ancient baptismal name of Turold while others claim that it was taken form a village in Normandy called Turold. The orthography in France anciently was Tyrell and Tyrrail; in Englend it was Tyrrel and Tyrell. If you're a Turold, Turrell, Terrell, Terrill, Tyrrell or any variant of the spelling, you are a member of one of the most researched families of our day. There are Terrill family organizations, Terrill family societies and at least one nationwide Terrill Association.

The name Terrill was first found in the Doomesday Book, compiled after the year 1086. The name has gone through many spelling changes but today, most all Americans spell it Terrell and pronounce it Ter - Rail

Several books and manuscripts have been published in the last few years concerning the origin of the name. Most all agree that the first person to be known as Terrell (or as he spelled it, Tirel) was Sir Ralf de Tirel, Lord of Poix and Viscount of Amies, in Essex. He was given his position in return for military favors to William the Conqueror at the time of the conquest of England by the Normans. Not much is known about his private life and his birth and death dates are not even known. However, he lived after the year 1000.

The Terrell family seems to have gained a strong footing in England during William the Conqueror's rule. Sir Walter Tyrell, a descendant of Sir Ralf de Tirel was known as the "Red Knight of Normandy." His name first appeared in a history of King William Rufus, the son of William the Conqueror, in relation to the tragic death of the monarch. It was Sir Walter who shot the King with an arrow which bounced off a tree during a hunting excursion. As it proved to be an accident, Sir Walter was allowed to keep his position but was required to pay a very large cash compensation.
